Trips with friends and lovers, 2004–2020, 2021 Digital Archival Print, 19.5x28" Unframed, Edition of 5
Faced with plenty of time over the last year to consider her own archives, American-Canadian artist Lili Huston-Herterich explored years of personal film photographs taken parallel to her artistic practice. She works in photography, sculpture, sound, and video, and sorts and researches through an abundance of materials—in this case, her snapshots and memories, or as she puts it, "accumulations of life."
Her work in Salon 44, "Trips with friends and lovers, 2004–2020," is a digital collage of film photographs that beautifully represent the way memory overlaps and obfuscates over time, woven together by shared places and people. The images that Huston-Herterich presents in this collage were taken in three different countries over a span of 16 years, but one can just as easily collapse them into a narrative of a weekend getaway. Looking at this collage makes one yearn for the approaching time when we can connect and travel with one another again, steadily accumulating life.
An exhibition of analogue black-and-white collage prints using the same method will be exhibited at Peach Rotterdam in May 2021. - Brian St. Denis, Photographer and Board Member, Gallery 44
